Participants wearing Oura ring sleep trackers in the magnesium group showed increases in objectively measured deep and REM sleep along with better next-day readiness and activity scores; self-reported measures of mood, alertness, and post-waking function also improved, though the researchers attributed some of that subjective improvement to a placebo effect rather than the mineral itself.

That’s one trial, in a specific magnesium compound, in a middle-aged, generally healthy group who already reported sleep problems. It doesn’t establish that magnesium supplements improve sleep broadly, and it hasn’t been independently replicated at scale.

How much magnesium do adults actually need?

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) set by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements ranges by age and sex: adult women 19 to 30 need 310 mg per day and women 31 and older need 320 mg; adult men 19 to 30 need 400 mg and men 31 and older need 420 mg. These figures reflect the amount sufficient to meet the needs of nearly all healthy people, per ODS, and are not a sleep-specific target.

Left uncorrected, more severe deficiency can involve numbness, muscle cramps, seizures, personality changes, and abnormal heart rhythms. True dietary deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet, though certain conditions and medications can increase the risk — a reason to raise any suspected deficiency with a clinician rather than self-treat with high-dose supplements.

Is it safe to take a magnesium supplement for sleep?
