Menotropin (also called human menopausal gonadotropin or HMG) is an active substance for the treatment of fertility disturbances. It consists of gonadotropins that are extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women,usually luteinizing (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Often, it contains human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as well.
Menotropin preparations are used for stimulating hormones by triggering FSH and LH production in the body. This drug was originally designed for use in women where it stimulates the ovaries to produce multiple follicles, thus making them more fertile.
Human urinary-derived menotropin preparations are exposed to the theoretical risk of infection from menopausal donors of urine. Nevertheless, the failure to irrefutably demonstrate infectivity following intracerebral inoculation with urine from TSE-infected hosts suggests that the risk associated with products derived from urine is merely theoretical.
Human menopausal gonadotropin is a glycoprotein produced by the anterior pituitary. During menopause, its production increases, with follicle stimulating hormone activity and luteinizing hormone activity. Urotropin (Menotrophin) is a postmenopausal gonadotropin. Mainly has the role of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), while luteinizing hormone (LH) has little effect. It can promote the development and maturation of follicles for women, and promote the secretion of estrogen by follicles, so that endometrial hyperplasia can be achieved. Subsequent use of chorionic gonadotropin can enhance ovulation promotion. For men, it can promote testicular seminiferous tubule development, promote spermatogenic cell division and sperm maturation. Used in combination with chorionic gonadotropin or clomiphene to treat anovulatory infertility. Any anovulatory patient with inadequate pituitary gonadotropin secretion or hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion can be used. At present, it is generally advocated for cases of clomiphene or bromocriptine-induced ovulation failure. Combined with clomiphene, it can reduce the dosage of this product by about 50%, and at the same time can reduce the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation. It is also used for primary or secondary amenorrhea, male sperm deficiency and ovarian function tests.
