Most streptococcus faecalis are round or oval, can extend along the chain direction, the diameter is 0.5-1.0um, most are line in double chain or short chain, generally they don`t move. This bacteria colony on the culture medium is big and smooth, the diameter is 1-2mm, whole reason, and pigment is rare. They require low nutrition; can live on the common nutrient agar medium. They can grow in the meat soup culture medium with the temperature of 10-45°C, PH value of 9.6 or containing 6.5 percent of NaCl, can bear the temperature of 65°C for 30 minutes, they can use arginine as energy, ferment sorbitol, do not ferment arabinose. They can grow on simple culture medium with folic acid.

Enterococcus faecalis is Gram-positive and hydrogen peroxide-negative cocci. It originally belonged to the genus Streptococcus, because of its low homology with other streptococci, even less than 9%, so Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium were isolated from Streptococcus and classified as Enterococcus. Enterococcus faecalis is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive lactic acid bacterium, the morphology of the cells is spherical or chain-shaped, the diameter is size, no capsule, no spores, strong environmental adaptability and resistance, can tolerate tetracycline, Kanamycin, gentamicin and other antibiotics, the growth conditions are not strict. It can use arginine as an energy source to ferment sorbitol without fermenting arabinose. Folic acid is not required for growth on simple media.
